South Asian Living & Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting people across the globe, but it is especially prominent in South Asia. In this blog post, we will look at why diabetes is so prevalent among South Asians and how individuals can best manage their health care needs while living with the condition.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes occurs when there is an imbalance between glucose (the body’s main source of energy) and insulin (the hormone that helps transport glucose to cells). If left untreated, diabetes can cause serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

Prevalence In South Asia

South Asians are four times more likely to develop diabetes than any other ethnic group – with India alone accounting for over seventy million diabetic patients! Unsurprisingly diet plays a significant role in this region – with traditional meals favoring high carbohydrate & fat content items such as rice and deep-fried dishes – however other factors such as being overweight or physically inactive also increased risk.

Managing South Asian Health With Diabetes

Though living with diabetes can be difficult, it does not mean that life must stop completely- individuals need merely to make changes to their lifestyle & diets in order stay healthy! Keeping track of blood sugar levels throughout the day, eating smaller portions more regularly rather than larger meals at one go, regular exercise (even just going on short walks helps!) are all things which can help control existing conditions and prevent further onset. Additionally speaking to healthcare professionals ahead of time is always recommended- they may suggest different/additional treatments tailored specifically for you as an individual!

Conclusion

Living with diabetes can be daunting and even frightening at times – however taking steps towards understanding both risk factors & potential management techniques will help ensure better long-term results! Please remember individual results may vary so please consult with a healthcare professional beforehand tailored specifically for both short term goals as well as long term health plans!
